There has been a rash of boating accidents locally in the past month, especially over the Memorial Day weekend. Several of these could have possibly been averted with the use of a kill switch by the boat's driver. That is the lanyard that attaches to your boat and then it only takes 5 seconds to attach to your PFD (personal floatation device) on your wrist or belt.
Many deadly boating accidents occur when the boat strikes something underwater and the driver and/or passengers are thrown from the boat into the water. Without a driver, the boat will stay at throttle, and turn in tight circles, many times coming back and running over the persons in the water with the propeller. If the kill switch is used, the boat engine will immediately shut off.
In my thinking, this is a no-brainer. Always, always, always attached that switch. Even if you just attach it to your wrist, it will pull loose in an accident.
Not using it can ruin more than just your fun boat trip! Be smart and stay alive!
