Will Your Home Insurance Cover Your New Smart Home Technology?

Home insurance provides financial protection for your property. It covers the structure of the home. It also covers the contents of your home. In most cases, it will cover the smart home technology within it. image of smart home diagram

However, every policy has limits. In many cases, this technology can be expensive. You may want to update your coverage to match this value.

Determine Your Policy Limits

To know if smart home technology coverage is available, check the value of your insurance policy. All home insurance policies have a per item and a total value limit. These limits range widely. The limit should represent the following:

  • The value of the structure (generally, the cost to rebuild the structure)
  • The value of the contents of the property (including all of your belongings)
  • Liability insurance

The policy’s contents coverage is generally a maximum of 10 percent of the value of the total policy. This number can change from one provider to the next.

Next, determine the value of your property and contents. If your home insurance content is a high value, it may not be enough to cover the value of the smart technology. Here’s an example.

  • You install a new smart home system. It costs you $1500 plus your monthly fee.
  • Let your home insurance agent know. The investment in some technology like this can reduce your premium costs.
  • Determine the per item maximum on your policy. If it is less than $1500, you may need to list your smart home technology on its own. If it is less, your policy has coverage.

Keep in mind it may be beneficial to purchase an add-on or rider to your policy. This can help you cover a specific high-value item like your smart home tech. Doing this allows the insurer to specifically value this item. It gains protection under your policy.

Some smart home technology is less expensive. As long as it is under your limit, you may not have to worry. However, it is always a good idea to let the home insurance agent know about your investment. This can help to protect your new technology from theft, vandalism, or fires. Verify with your insurer at 409.203.2027 what the options are. Most often, these types of updates do not have to cost much more. Yet, they can provide you with ample financial protection. Consider adjusting your home insurance policy.
