What To Consider When Traveling Internationally In Your RV

RV Driving Through the Pines

You’ve spent a lot of time on the road, crisscrossing the country in your RV. Now it is time to take your travels to places more exotic. It is time to go international.

International travel always comes with special concerns for your safety and well-being. When you take your RV across the border, these concerns will also extend to your vehicle.

Crossing an international border can bring insurance risks for your RV coverage. Just as is the case on domestic roads, you always run the risk of accidents or incidents when traveling abroad.

But, when you travel internationally, you could also see changes to your RV insurance. Don’t let changes in coverage catch you unaware.

Traveling in Mexico and Canada

Many American RV drivers desire to travel between the U.S., Canada and Mexico at some point. Most insurance companies realize that RV owners might take the RV across the continental U.S. border. Insurance providers generally make allowances for these scenarios and coverage often continues past the border.

However, your RV insurance status may change when you cross the border. Different insurance risks in Canada and Mexico could lay outside your current policy limits. Your policy might even stop coverage when you cross the border. Insurance coverage differs not only because of international travel, but also based on which country you visit. For instance, your policy might have total coverage in Canada, but no protection at all in Mexico. Mexican law, for instance, requires foreigners to carry Mexican auto insurance for the duration of their travel.

Traveling Internationally Outside Canada and Mexico

Sometimes, you might want to take your RV beyond just Canada and Mexico.

Foreign countries have different car insurance, driving and driver requirements. The more these practices differ, the higher your liabilities are likely to be.

If you plan to use your RV to travel in a foreign country that doesn’t border the continental U.S., then you will need to consult with your insurance provider. He or she can advise you on insurance logistics of doing so.

You will also likely have to contact the U.S. State Department and a consular representative for the country where you plan to travel. The consulates will likely have to issue documentation and approve you to bring your RV into their country.

When planning international travel, be sure check your RV insurance coverage before you cross the border. Know when and where the insurance might not cover you. You should also always keep insurance documentation on hand.

Miller Insurance Agency is here to help you choose an RV insurance policy that will cover you wherever you want to go. Call us at (409) 899-9531 for a free Beaumont RV insurance quote.
