Protect Your Car With An Anti-Theft Device

Car BurglarCar theft is upsetting and expensive. If you haven't been the victim of a car theft, consider yourself very fortunate; it's quite common and can happen to anyone. If you haven't done so, get an anti-theft device installed in your car. While these devices won't guarantee that you'll never be victimized, they make your vehicle a less desirable target for thieves. Here are five anti-theft devices to consider.

Common Sense

Yes, this isn't an anti-theft device; but if a person isn't cautious enough to close their windows, lock their doors and remove their keys from their car when they leave it, they likely won't bother setting an anti-theft device. These three basic oversights are common reasons why cars are stolen.

Electronic Alarm That Disables the Engine

Most people ignore car alarms, but these devices make things very uncomfortable for the thief. Even if an alarm doesn't deter the thief, the associated disabled engine should. In addition to the electronic system, get a hood lock so that the thief can't disable the alarm by disconnecting the battery.

Hidden Kill Switch

This should be used in addition to another anti-theft device. Layering more than one device is extremely effective. Locate the kill switch in an area that's not obvious. One possibility is locating it under the hood in a spot that's not readily visible and then installing a hood lock.

Brake-Pedal Lock

These are effective in automatic transmission cars that require the brake to be depressed before the engine starts. For a standard transmission, clutch pedal locks are available.

The Club

This device is installed on the steering wheel and prevents it from being turned which makes it impossible to steer the car. This low tech device has been used for decades and is still effective against most thieves who aren't willing to cut through the steering wheel to remove it.

Combining one mechanical device with an electronic anti-theft system will provide the best security possible. In addition to this, park your car in secure and well-lit areas. When using parking lots, place your car next to the entrance of the office building or shopping mall where the thief would be exposed to lots of people.

Another benefit of installing anti-theft devices is that they can lower your auto insurance premium. Talk to your independent insurance agent to learn more.
