How Learning to Teach Driving Skills Affects Auto Insurance

When a child is old enough to learn to drive, most parents have mixed feelings. While it's exciting to see your child growing up and reaching these milestones, getting behind the wheel of a car is a major responsibility. New research shows that parents who take the time to learn how to teach their children driving skills will produce safer drivers, resulting in fewer auto insurance claims.

In the study, there were two groups of student drivers. The first group had parents that taught from their own experience. The second group's parents watched short, two-minute videos that instructed them how to teach certain driving skills, such as changing lanes or parallel parking. They also kept detailed logs noting driving time and specific experiences the student encountered behind the wheel. At the end of six months, the new drivers in the second group were 65 percent less likely to fail a rigorous driving test.

The researchers feel that when a teen is learning how to drive, parents need to learn how to teach the skills effectively. The video lessons provided the opportunity in a convenient, concise manner. They also found that, while states mandate new drivers to practice a certain number of hours, parents should be intentional about exposing their students to a variety of situations, such as driving at night and in poor weather conditions.

Every parent wants their child to develop into a safe driver, but this research shows that it is important to be intentional about learning how to instruct. Parents who take the time to learn how to teach driving skills produce safer drivers, who in turn, will have less of a chance of getting into accidents requiring auto insurance claims.
