Do You Need Boat Insurance For A Kayak Or Canoe?

KayakingYou might not have what we usually consider a boat. But if you have kayaks or canoes, you should talk with an independent insurance agent to see if you need insurance or not. Why have this conversation? Because while kayaks and canoes are built to float, they can still sink.

Besides sinking, your kayak and canoe could be in danger of being stolen. You probably transport the vessel on top of your car. If you stop at a store or gas station, then someone might steal it. If you take your kayak/canoe off of your vehicle at the lake edge and then go park, someone could easily take it.

What should you discuss with your agent?
  1. Some insurance agencies say that if your kayak or canoe is worth $1,500 or less, then it's probably covered in your homeowners policy. Most policies will cover your kayak or canoe anywhere, except at a second home (you have to include it in your insurance for your second home). Kayaks you buy at most sporting goods stores fall into this category.

However, if it's worth more than $1,500, then you might need to talk about scheduled or itemized insurance coverage, just as you would jewelry. Discuss the value of your kayak or canoe and coverage in your homeowners policy. You will also want to discuss if there is coverage for while your kayak or canoe is in storage. Kayaks that you buy with specialized features might be in this category.
  2. If you loan your kayak or canoe to other people, do you have adequate liability insurance? When people use your watercraft, they might look to you for insurance coverage if injured due to your kayak or canoe. Discuss liability policies with your agent and see what is covered and for how much. You might also want to talk about umbrella policies that could cover you for a million dollars of damages. Your agent might also help you find boating classes for you, your friends and family.
  3. If you own more than one kayak or canoe, be sure and look at the combined value. Discuss the difference between insuring the worth of the watercraft and the replacement cost. If you own multiple watercraft, don't forget to discuss the value of paddles, life jackets and other equipment required for using kayaks and canoes. This is especially important if you have had a specialized skirt made for the kayak or special paddles for the kayak or canoe.

Do you own a kayak or canoe? Now might be a good time to talk with an insurance agent.
