We are celebrating 30 years of business at Miller Insurance Agency.
Man-O-man have things changed during those years! When Kelli and I first hung out a sign at 7220 Eastex Freeway in 1983, computers were not even a part of our office equipment. A calculator and rate manuals were the tools of the job. A photocopier was our big investment. Carbon copy applications, postmarked to assure binding were the norm. Kelli worked another job til 5:00 each day, then drove to the office and helped me process the days work. Sometimes we would be at the office til 10:00 PM trying to finish the mounds of paperwork required. We were so excited to have our own agency! In 1985 I finally convinced Kelli to leave her other job and work at our business full time. It was a big and scary step. But almost right away, we knew it was the right move. We needed her in the office to make sure we could provide the service our customers required. As a matter of fact, for the first 12 years we did not take a family vacation, or miss a days work for illness. We wanted to make sure our business succeeded!
Technology! When fax machines came along, I was amazed at how much time and work was saved over regular postage or Fedex letters. And no, I still have no idea how a fax machine does what it does. No clue. You could probably explain it to me and I still wouldn't understand. And don't even try to explain how a computer works to me! I am just thrilled that they are simplified enough that a dinosaur like Willie Miller can use one! But computers have revolutionized the insurance biz like everthing else, I suppose. With everything so automated, we are able to service and sell so much more business! The paperwork saved and ease of doing business is incredible. And now with i-Pads, we are able to sell and service policies from almost anywhere. Simply amazing!
The one thing that has stayed the same for 30 years is our goal to provide great service to our customers. And I hate to admit that Kelli is so much better than I am. She can remember the name for a customer that has not been in the office in a year! ( Of course don't ask her where her car keys are.)
The other thing that has remained the same is that Kelli and I are still partners in this business, and in our lives. We also got married in 1983. So this is our 30th anniversary, too. And after 30 years, she still takes my breath away.
